A little about me

About Me

I like building things that move, compute, respond, and occasionally fly.

I’m an embedded software engineer, private pilot, and lifelong tinkerer with a particular interest in the intersection of software, electronics, hardware, and aviation.

I enjoy understanding how things work, getting close to the hardware, and turning an idea into something I can actually touch, test, and use.

That’s what this site is about.

Engineering

My professional background is in embedded software, with a focus on systems where software and hardware have to work together reliably.

I’ve always enjoyed the parts of engineering where disciplines overlap—firmware talking to hardware, sensors becoming useful information, software controlling something physical, and figuring out why a system isn’t behaving quite the way it should.

Sometimes the interesting solution is in the code. Sometimes it’s in the circuit. And sometimes it’s somewhere in between.

I especially enjoy working on systems where reliability matters and where understanding the hardware is just as important as understanding the software.

Aviation

I’ve been a private pilot for years, and aviation has become a natural extension of my interest in technology.

Flying brings together an incredible range of engineering disciplines. Avionics, instruments, controls, communications, navigation, engines, software, and—perhaps most importantly—the person in the cockpit all have to work together.

I’m fascinated by that relationship between pilot, machine, and technology.

Being a pilot also changes the way I look at engineering. When you’re actually using a system, details that might seem insignificant on a schematic or in a specification can become very important.

That perspective is something I bring to my technical projects.

Flight Simulation

Flight simulation brings many of my interests together in one place.

I enjoy flying in a simulator, but I’m particularly interested in everything surrounding the simulation: physical controls, electronics, firmware, interfaces, cockpit hardware, and the challenge of making a virtual aircraft feel more like a real one.

That has led me to design and build my own flight-simulation hardware.

I’m experimenting with microcontrollers, custom HID devices, physical cockpit controls, simulator interfaces, and other pieces of hardware that help bridge the gap between the physical and virtual worlds.

Some of these projects may eventually become products. Others exist simply because I wanted to see if I could build them.

I’m perfectly happy with both.

Building Things

A lot of my projects start with a question.

How does that work?

Could I build one myself?

What would happen if I tried it this way?

Those questions tend to lead down interesting paths.

A project might begin with a small piece of firmware and turn into a circuit board, a mechanical enclosure, a custom control, and a whole lot of debugging.

Not everything works the first time. In fact, some of the most useful things I’ve learned have come from the projects that didn’t.

That’s part of what I want to document here.

What You’ll Find Here

This site is a place to document what I’m working on and what I’m learning.

Expect a mixture of:

  • Embedded software and firmware
  • Electronics and microcontrollers
  • Hardware/software integration
  • Aviation and flying
  • Flight simulation
  • Custom cockpit controls and devices
  • X-Plane and simulator interfaces
  • Personal engineering projects
  • Experiments and technical rabbit holes

Some articles will be detailed technical explorations. Others may simply document a project, an idea, or something I learned along the way.

The goal isn’t to make everything look perfect.

The common thread is curiosity. It’s to build, learn, and share the process.

What’s Next?

I’m particularly interested in continuing to explore the intersection of physical hardware and software—especially where it meets aviation and simulation.

That means more custom controls, more electronics, more firmware, more experiments, and probably a few projects that I haven’t thought of yet.

Some of those projects may eventually find their way into the flight-simulation devices I build and offer here.

Thanks for Stopping By

I’m building this site as I build the projects that live on it—one piece at a time.

If you’re interested in engineering, embedded systems, electronics, aviation, flight simulation, or just making things, I hope you’ll find something here that’s useful—or at least interesting.

Welcome aboard.
